Cathay prices upgrades using a distance-based award chart. The lowest option is 6,000 miles to move from economy to premium economy on an ultra-short route. Upgrading from economy to business starts at 11,000 miles, and business to first class starts at 15,000 miles.
Asia Miles expire after 18 months of no account activity. Any earning or redeeming activity resets the clock, including crediting a flight to the program or transferring points from a credit card partner.
You cannot directly redeem American Airlines miles on Cathay's website. But since both are Oneworld partners, you can book Cathay Pacific flights with AAdvantage miles through American's program. However, Cathay Pacific restricts most premium cabin award space to its own Asia Miles members.
