Cash back redemptions return only 1 cent per point. Booking travel through the Chase Travel Portal can be worth up to 2 cents per point with the Chase Sapphire Reserve for Points Boost redemptions. Transferring points to airline or hotel partners can deliver even higher value, up to 7-10 cents per point.

With a $95 annual fee, the Sapphire Preferred delivers 5X on Chase Travel and 3X on dining while offering $170 in annual credits ($50 hotel + $120 DashPass). Points transfer 1:1 to 14 partners, often redeeming for 1.5-2+ cents each.
The Sapphire Preferred serves travelers who want rewards without premium costs. With a $95 annual fee, it delivers 5X on Chase Travel, 3X on dining, and $170 in annual credits. For beginners building rewards, it's a strategic entry point into Chase's ecosystem.
The Sapphire Preferred is ideal for those who can't yet qualify for the Sapphire Reserve or won't use the Reserve's full benefits. With a $95 annual fee, it delivers strong value through 5X on Chase Travel, 3X on dining, a $50 hotel credit, and a 25% bonus when redeeming through Chase Travel. The 75,000-point sign-up bonus is worth $1,125-1,500 when transferred to partners like Hyatt or United.
For beginners building rewards portfolios, the Sapphire Preferred offers a cost-effective way to accumulate transferable Ultimate Rewards points.
The Chase Sapphire Preferred® is a great choice for:
- Those who don’t qualify for the Sapphire Reserve but want to earn transferable points
- Couples playing the “two-player game." One person gets the Reserve, the other the Preferred to stagger sign-up bonuses
- Travelers looking for a low annual fee card with high rewards potential
With the Preferred, you get a $50 hotel credit **(when booking through the Chase portal)**.
Other perks include:
- 5x points on travel through the Chase portal
- 2x on other travel purchases
- 3x on dining, online grocery purchases, and select streaming services
- Free DashPass membership, solid travel insurance protections, cell phone coverage, and extended warranty benefits
This card might not be the best choice if you qualify for the Reserve and prefer more comprehensive travel perks.
**Chase Ultimate Rewards is among the most valued point systems.**
- Ultimate Rewards points transfer 1:1 to 14 partners including Hyatt, United, and Southwest — delivering 1.5-2+ cents per point in value.
- You can also book travel through Chase Travel portal at 1.25 cents per point (or 1 cent via cash back).
- The quality of transfer partners (especially Hyatt, United, Southwest) is exceptional for premium cabin flights and hotel nights.
- You can get a multiplier effect by combining points from multiple Chase cards (Sapphire, Freedom, Ink).
- Ultimate Rewards works as a points savings account — top off partner programs or book direct through Chase Travel.
The Sapphire Preferred sits one tier below the Sapphire Reserve and delivers strong benefits at a lower annual fee.
Here's the comparison:
- $95 annual fee vs. $795 for the Reserve
- $50 hotel credit (Preferred) vs. $300 travel credit (Reserve)

The most efficient way to redeem Chase points is to transfer them to travel partners. Transfers deliver outsized value, often well more than 2 cents per point. Booking through the Chase Travel Portal is easier, but learning partner awards maximizes long-term value and flexibility.
The two Chase Sapphire Reserve cards, personal and business, offer the biggest signup bonuses and most perks, but they also carry higher annual fees. The Chase Sapphire Preferred is an excellent alternative for travelers who want strong value and transferable points with a lower fee.
You cannot book Airbnb through Chase Travel, as Airbnb is not a direct transfer partner. Chase does offer vacation rentals in its portal for select cardholders. Log in to Chase Travel, and if your card is eligible you will see options to search hotels or vacation homes.
American Express provides access to more lounges than Chase through the Global Lounge Collection, which includes Centurion Lounges, Delta Sky Clubs, and other partner lounges. The premium cards from both reward systems offer access to the most lounges.

- No lounge access or TSA PreCheck/Global Entry credit (Reserve exclusive)
- The Reserve offers more statement credits, but only delivers value if you use them all
For couples, the Preferred pairs well with the Reserve. Chase allows household point transfers, so you can consolidate points and stagger sign-up bonuses.
The Sapphire Preferred becomes essential when adding Chase business cards (Ink Cash or Ink Unlimited). These business cards earn Ultimate Rewards but don't offer transfer partners. Only Sapphire cards (Preferred, Reserve, Reserve Business) or Ink Business Preferred access transfers.
If the $95 fee isn't worth it after year one, downgrade to a Freedom card. Transfer or use points first — Freedom cards can't transfer to partners.
In our two-player household, my wife holds the Sapphire Reserve while I carry the Sapphire Preferred. We each earned a bonus, share points via household transfers, and maximize the perks that matter most. When I applied, the offer was 75,000 points — elevated offers like this are worth waiting for if you're not in a rush.
If I were solo and could qualify for the Reserve, I'd choose that instead. The benefits are stronger and the $795 fee is easily offset with frequent travel. But for starting out, or splitting strategy across multiple cards and players, the Sapphire Preferred is a solid foundation.
